We Needed This: A Review of Brent Faiyaz's "Gravity" featuring Tyler, the Creator

We Needed This: A Review of Brent Faiyaz's Gravity (featuring Tyler, the Creator)

Speaking for myself, it has been a difficult start to the winter semester, but it has been a really fun day for music. Around midnight today, Brent Faiyaz released his new single Gravity featuring Tyler, the Creator. Seeing their names together on a title like this filled me up with so much freaking joy. I love listening to both Brent and Tyler, so it was no surprise that I would thoroughly enjoy the new release.

The song is based in C# minor, yet with the M3's instituted into the harmony--the base chords hitting betwixt each M3--you can't help but feel some type of altered happiness in it. The rhythm of it all feels like some sort of slow motioned skipping, a memory frozen in time. You can tell by listening that Tyler has a lot of influence on the composition. It takes a signature Tyler feel, but hey, that may be just my opinion. To best describe it, I would say the single is nostalgic. Yeah, "nostalgic" is the word, maybe. It's hard to put words to it, but it's a bitter sweet feeling that emanates through the song. This of course being matched with the lyricism the song delivers.

The alto of Brent Faiyaz mixed with the automated bass in Tyler's voice in the beginning of the song gives good enough contrast to really portray the tumultuous feelings associated with the message of the song. Faiyaz sings that his girl "holds him down like gravity," however, he is letting her go because he doesn't want her"waitin' too long" on him to come around. In short, if you could make the idiom "have your cake and eat it too" into a more based lyrical masterpiece, you would be morally obliged to ask Mr. Wood and Mr. Okonma. If you don't...well you're really weird for that.

Tyler's feature is definitely for the astrology girls. With the many mentions of celestial bodies, you can't help but feel encapsulated in spatial heaven...almost. You feel your own shine, but you yearn for the other millions of lightyears away. You do what you can to get momentary satisfaction as you try your hardest to get back to the one you love. I ask this to you: is it really worth it to go out of your way to bring celestial bodies together only to be engulfed in the vacuum of each other rather than to stay afar? This is what I was left wondering as the song ended. Great song. No, I'm not crying it's the allergies; I don't need this.
